    Job Summary:

    Provides expertise to the Deans of the Professional Schools on critical issues related to academic and educational affairs, including affiliation agreements and academic employment, as well as matters involving conflicts of interest, outside professional activity and faculty misconduct. Serves as an advisor to the Deans and their staff on policy, regulatory and personnel matters. Proactively, in conjunction with the Deans and their leadership teams, identifies areas of legal risk and advises on risk mitigation and management when the professional schools are considering undertaking new initiatives or developing new strategies.  With a primary focus on the School of Medicine, serves as a member of the Dean’s senior leadership team.

    Additionally, serves as a campus resource on complex academic matters and interacts with all relevant stakeholders on academic matters.  Independently handles a full range of legal matters and projects, to include the most complex and that of substantial importance and impact. Interprets complex facts and the law in areas of high ambiguity. Provides functional advice, training and / or guidance to less-experienced attorneys. May act as a liaison with outside counsel, and / or represent the University in complex litigation.

    Requirements:

    • Relevant practice experience in a law firm, or in-house counsel for an academic institution, corporation or other entity.
    • In-depth decision making ability, even when unpopular, earning credibility and support from colleagues. 
    • Relied on to represent institutional concerns persuasively to internal and external parties. 
    • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise discretion and tact when handling sensitive or potentially sensitive issues. 
    • Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards.
    • 5+ years of directly related work experience
    • JD from an accredited law school.
    • Must be a member in good standing of the California Bar. Out-of-state hire will be afforded time to pass the Bar within a reasonable time period.
