The National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) advances employee rights and serves lawyers who advocate for equality and justice in the American workplace. In this current political context, NELA is seeking a leader to raise the visibility of the work, grow and support its membership, improve the legislative environment at the federal and state levels through the NELA Affiliate network, and determine how best to share its information assets. This is an opportunity to lead to greater impact and success the country’s largest professional organization that is exclusively comprised of lawyers who represent employees in cases involving employment discrimination and other employment-related matters.
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for carrying out the vision and mission of NELA and its subsidiary, The Employee Rights Advocacy Institute for Law & Policy (The Institute)—and in fact will be managing the search for The Institute’s next leader in mid-2018. The ED is responsible for ensuring that NELA serves the needs and interests of the organization pursuant to its mission, Bylaws, policies, and resolutions, and as directed by the Executive Board, which is the primary policy-setting body of the organization. In addition, the ED provides NELA and The Institute general oversight and supervision of all operations, programs, and activities of the organizations. The ED reports to the NELA Executive Board. Key areas of first year activity involve consensus-building around a strategic vision, strengthening the communications effort, fund development, and leading teams through change. With a Staff of 9, offices in Oakland, CA and Washington DC, a budget of $1.6 million, healthy cash reserves, and renewed energy for its next chapter, this position is a unique leadership opportunity.
