    Primary Job Scope:

    Abbott is seeking a Senior Counsel to support the commercial work of its multi-billion-dollar vascular products groups.  The ideal candidate will have strong and demonstrated leadership as well as communication skills, diverse contracting and transactional experience, the ability to work in a team setting, and the experience or flexibility to advise on issues in multiple areas of law.  This Senior Counsel may supervise staff.

    Core Responsibilities:

    • Work with Division Counsel and other Senior Counsels to develop and implement legal programs that ensure the business is equipped with the legal guidance, contracts, tools, and solutions to execute business objectives in an effective and legally-compliant manner.
    • Provide transactional capabilities, including drafting contracts and advising on legal matters related to such transactions.
    • Review laws, cases, rules, regulations, releases and requirements.
    • Review, draft and revise legal documents and provides input.
    • Resolve legal issues, provide proactive legal advice and manage high risk, high complexity matters under guidance of more senior attorneys.
    • Assist with U.S. and international compliance initiatives.
    • Anticipate internal/external business and regulatory issues and provides applicable legal advice.
    • Advise key business and legal leaders on issues of concern to Abbott.
    • Communicate with third parties such as regulators, outside counsel, parties to negotiations.
    • Supervise and review the work of Counsel and outside counsel as and when needed.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Juris Doctorate (J.D.) degree and be licensed to practice in any state.
    • 7+ years of legal experience in the medical device or related industries.
    • Demonstrated experience advising all levels of clients on a wide variety of legal issues of interest to Abbott, including: commercial, legal regulatory, research and development, and clinical matters.
    • Strong commercial contracting background.
    • Experience successfully representing and managing the legal affairs of a business having international operations.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated understanding of the laws, regulations, standards, and guidance governing the conduct of a medical device company.
    • Leadership and ability to see and handle more than the legal issues of a project; strong, pragmatic business acumen with the ability to recognize the business consequences of legal advice; a strategic and innovative thinker who can develop and articulate a clear understanding of the company’s strategy from all perspectives and find creative solutions to complex legal problems.
    • Must be able to move easily between a hands-on, operations-focused view and a strategic outlook.
    • Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business model.
    • Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader within a legal department, with a focus on developing talent.
    • Ability to build collaborative relationships with leaders and co-workers at all levels.
    • Ability to travel domestically and internationally (approximately 10%).
