    The Federal Public Defender, Northern District of California is accepting applications for the position of a full-time Assistant Federal Public Defender in its San Francisco office. The Defender operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases.     The term for this position will be for three years from the date of hire, or September 30, 2022 (whichever date is earliest).

    JOB DESCRIPTION: Duties include trial, appellate and ancillary matters under the direction of the Federal Defender.

    This termed position is for a trial attorney in the San Francisco office of the Federal Defender. While this AFPD may appear before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, the attorney’s primary responsibility will be to represent clients in the District and Magistrate Courts of the Northern District of California.

    The successful applicant will have a demonstrated aptitude for trial and appellate practice, and a commitment to the vigorous representation of indigent accused persons.

    Please note that telecommuting is not authorized for AFPD positions. This Trial AFPD will be required to work at the San Francisco duty station, unless out of the office for investigation, jail visits, or other work-related business. Transfers to the Oakland or San Jose branch offices, from the assigned San Francisco duty station, will not be authorized for this termed position. The position requires travel for training, investigation and litigation.

    REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must:

    • Currently be a member of good standing of a state bar, or the District of Columbia
    • Possess strong research skills and effective written and oral communication abilities.

    A condition of employment is membership of the State Bar of California within one year of the start date.

    This is a full time position. Salary is based on the Judicial Salary Plan and is commensurate with experience. The position is subject to mandatory electronic fund transfer (direct deposit) for payment of salary. This position is subject to an FBI fingerprint check and background investigation. Employment will be provisional and contingent upon the satisfactory completion of the required investigation. Please note that attorneys at the office of the Federal Public Defender may not engage in the private practice of law.
