    Staff Attorney II or Senior Attorney, DoE

    Civil Rights Practice Group

    (Any Office: Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego or Sacramento)

    SALARY RANGE: $73,010-$112,005, DoE

    Apply by July 22, 2019, for early August interviews (link).

    Join our team fighting for inclusion and access for people with disabilities. With the influx of new IOLTA funding, DRC is seeking one or more bold litigators for our Civil Rights Practice Group.

    We are a diverse, statewide team of passionate attorneys developing impactful cases to stop discrimination against people with disabilities. While we use a variety of advocacy tools, we are a litigation-focused group. We work together on our lawsuits to ensure that everyone has opportunities to both lead and support cases. And we are adopting community lawyering and identity-conscious approaches to reach Californians we have previously missed.

    Our current goals include:

     confronting the criminalization of people experiencing homelessness;

     protecting and increasing affordable, accessible housing;

     challenging discrimination in private and public programs;

     ensuring access to transportation and sidewalks;

     increasing access to courts; and

     addressing the intersectional needs of people with disabilities.

    In addition to our specialized unlawful detainer practice, our work includes:

     Challenging San Diego’s shameful persecution of homeless people with disabilities living in vehicles, Bloom v. San Diego, S.D. Cal. 17-cv-02324 (won preliminary injunction August 2018);

     Fixing two decades of constant elevator outages in an eight-story HUD senior and disabled building in Compton, Hunter v. Chatman, C.D. Cal. 18-cv-05760 (settled April 2019);

     Pushing for equal access to a physically inaccessible community college campus, Guerra v. WLAC, 9th Cir. 18-56236 (briefing in progress); and

     Teaming up with Legal Aid Society of Orange County and Latham & Watkins, LLP, in protecting the rights of, and obtaining appropriate services for, people experiencing homelessness who were forced out of the Santa Ana riverbed, Ramirez v. County of Orange, C.D. Cal., 18-cv-00220-DOC-KES (associated as counsel of record May 2019)

     Appealing a published decision (obtained before DRC’s involvement) that misinterpreted the Section 8 developmental disabilities income exemption not to exempt IHSS payments that keep people with developmental disabilities in their homes, Reilly v. Marin Housing Authority, Cal. S. Ct. S249593 (fully briefed, awaiting oral argument date);

     Reclaiming meaningful access to sidewalks for people with vision and mobility impairments in the face of shared scooters and bikes, Montoya v. San Diego, S.D. Cal. 19-cv-00054 (five motions to dismiss pending);

    Minimum Qualifications: Juris Doctor and admission to the California State Bar.

    This flyer is for two postings on our Web site. The Staff Attorney II position requires at least four years of practice and some litigation experience. The Senior Attorney position requires at least eight years of practice and significant litigation experience.
