    POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT TERMED APPELLATE AFPD – SAN FRANCISCO / OAKLAND The Federal Public Defender, Northern District of California is accepting applications for a fulltime Appellate Assistant Federal Public Defender (“Appellate AFPD”). This position will begin upon the date of hire and will end on September 30, 2022. During this term, the Appellate AFPD will be stationed in the San Francisco or the Oakland office of the Federal Defender, depending on the needs of the office. The Defender operates under the authority of the Criminal Justice Act, 18 U.S.C. § 3006A, to provide defense services in federal criminal cases.     JOB DESCRIPTION: Duties include providing support to the Federal Defender and Assistant Federal Public Defenders through legal research and writing. The Appellate AFPD will research and draft appellate briefs and petitions, argue appeals in the Ninth Circuit, assist in briefing pretrial and in limine motions, draft proposed jury instructions, research and draft legal arguments for sentencing memoranda, and will provide other assistance to trial counsel assigned to the defense of federal criminal cases.

    REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must: • Be a law school graduate and current member of good standing of the State Bar of California; • Have the ability to identify and analyze legal issues from lengthy and complex records; • Write clearly and concisely; • Possess excellent research skills; • Have demonstrated expertise in computer-assisted legal research; • Employ strong time-management skills; • Preferably have experience analyzing federal criminal law and sentencing issues; • Be proficient in Microsoft Word 2016. This is a full-time termed position. Salary is based on the Judicial Salary Plan and is commensurate with experience. The position is subject to mandatory electronic fund transfer (direct deposit) for payment of salary. This position is subject to an FBI fingerprint check and background investigation. Employment will be provisional and contingent upon the satisfactory completion of the required investigation. Applicants must be able to work well with others and have a commitment to working with and on behalf of indigent clients charged with federal criminal offenses. The position requires physical activity; applicants must be able to lift and file banker’s boxes of legal files and move 2 boxes of case files or supplies. Specifically, applicants must be able to sit for extended periods, stand, bend, and lift materials up to 25 pounds. Federal salary for this position will be based on qualifications and experience.
