    Berkeley Lab has an exciting new Legal Counsel opportunity to be part of a vital in-house legal department at the nation's premier national research laboratory doing a broad range of cutting-edge law and counselling. We are looking for a bright, collegial early career attorney to join the Office of Laboratory Counsel at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.     What You Will Do:

    • Provide a full range of legal services, including advice and counsel to clients and negotiating and drafting agreements primarily (although not exclusively) in construction, procurement, contracts, grants and other transactions, and environmental compliance. 

    • Assist in developing effective compliance and risk mitigation strategies to facilitate the Laboratory’s complex operations. Interpret complex facts and the law in areas of ambiguity.

    • Serve as a trusted strategic partner with Laboratory business units, providing practical advice and alternative solutions to business issues.

    • Represent institutional concerns persuasively to internal and external parties and consistently demonstrate an understanding of diverse needs and interests of various stakeholder groups.

    What is Required:

    • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school. 

    • Member in good standing of California Bar Association, or willingness to take and pass the California Bar exam.

    • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience post law degree in a law firm, or in-house counsel for an academic institution, corporation, or other entity.

    • Demonstrated ability to act as a team player in all circumstances, as defined by collegiality, contributing to the successful outcome of initiatives, information sharing, being fully accountable, and respecting others.

    • Possess high integrity, demonstrated outstanding interpersonal skills, proven ability to interact effectively and develop and maintain productive working relationships with an array of  individuals, and client groups with diverse interests; ability to make and communicate difficult decisions; demonstrated ability to influence and build consensus.

    • Exceptional written, verbal, presentation and listening skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, logically, and persuasively. Ability to draft accurate, complete and persuasive legal documents, position statements and briefs.

    • Demonstrated understanding of ethical issues, proven ability to exercise ethical judgment and behavior, and proven ability to maintain confidentiality with regard to sensitive issues.

    • Minimal anticipated travel.

    Additional Desired Qualifications:

    • Experience in public sector construction contracting and claims.

    • Experience in environmental, health & safety, including hazardous materials, hazardous waste, storm water, OSHA and administrative enforcement actions.

    • Experience advising public agency clients on CEQA compliance strategies and litigation.

    • Experience with federal government contracts (FAR/DEAR).

    Notes:

    • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid) .

    • Classification will depend upon the applicant's level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.

    • The Legal Counsel is a career position that is appointed by and serves at the discretion of the Laboratory, and this appointment is at will and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.

    • This position is subject to the financial disclosure requirements of the California Political Reform Act of 1974. The successful candidate for this position may be required to file financial interest statements upon assuming this position, annually while holding this position, and when leaving this position.

    • Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
