    Position: BayLegal seeks an attorney with a demonstrated commitment to public interest law and social justice advocacy who is interested in using their legal skills to remove legal barriers to accessing health treatment or coverage throughout the Bay Area. 

    Location: This position is based in our Oakland office.  As a member of BayLegal's regional practice, there may be travel within BayLegal's broader service areas to address the regional nature of poverty and as necessary for training and broader advocacy.

    As a Health Consumer Center Attorney you will have the opportunity:

    • Learn and assist with the legal needs of underserved and vulnerable communities in theBay Area particularly focused on addressing the barriers to accessing healthcare treatment and/or coverage;
    • Provide clients with a wide-range of legal assistance from advice/counsel to larger systemic advocacy and impact litigation;
    • Represent individuals in administrative hearings and plan grievance proceedings at every stage of litigation, including negotiating with plans and providers for coverage of services and/or access to treatment;
    • Provide workshops and technical assistance to community partners and client community on health access issues and a broad range of civil legal issues;
    • Develop new relationships and engage in collaborations with a range of public and private community partners, including governmental agencies, courts, and community based organizations, to ensure integrative services and address systemic barriers facing BayLegal's client community;
    • Engage in other tasks and projects that further the interest of furthering BayLegal's mission and operations as a non-profit; and
    • Make systemic change through impact litigation and policy work.

     

    Requirements/Qualifications about the successful candidate:

    · Experience and knowledge, or willingness to learn, health care related issues, including Medicare, Medi-Cal and managed care

    · Membership in the California State Bar or willingness to apply to become a Registered Legal Services Attorney if licensed in another state.

    · Successfully passing a background check (requirement in part because the position requires access to personal healthcare data).

    · Bilingual ability in Spanish, Mandarin, or Cantonese preferred.

    · Strong personal work ethic and ability to organize time, manage diverse activities, and meet critical deadlines with minimal supervision.

    · Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented

    · Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work collaboratively with a dynamic team

    · Curious and self-directed with an ability to anticipate what needs to be done

    · Ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects while maintaining a firm grasp of individual project details

    · Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.

    Compensation and Benefits: We offer a diverse, family friendly environment, and compensation based on competitive public interest salaries along with a generous benefits package.
