    Tahirih Justice Center, a non-profit legal services organization, seeks to hire an engaging and empathetic lawyer for a part time Staff Attorney role in our San Francisco Bay Area office. This position will provide critical legal interdisciplinary representation to Tahirih’s clients who are immigrant survivors of violence seeking humanitarian immigration protection before DHS, EOIR, federal courts, and California state courts. The ideal candidate is an activist-minded, self-starting professional with excellent oratory and written communication skills. This a staff position that reports to the Managing Attorney.

    Note: This position is listed concurrently with the Part Time Immigration Contract Attorney position in our San Francisco Bay Area office, but only one position will be filled. Applicants may submit one application package for one or both roles and may state a degree of preference for either role. Roles will be considered based on the experience of the applicant and best fit within our local program.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Advise, counsel, and represent immigrant victims of gender-based violence and derivatives in their unique legal matters, including: asylum, VAWA petitions, the U and T nonimmigrant statuses, and other humanitarian relief before the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, immigration courts, and federal court
    • Coordinate with Tahirih’s social services department to address client needs and to provide holistic services within Tahirih’s interdisciplinary model
    • Conduct telephonic and in-person screenings of potential clients and provide brief advice and counsel
    • Recruit, train, and mentor pro bono attorneys to co-counsel cases
    • Support periodic fundraising campaigns (e.g., individual giving campaign, special events
    • Attend organizational trainings, staff meetings, and events

    Requirements

    • Active bar membership in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction

    • One year of experience working on humanitarian immigration matters

    • Strong interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills

    • Professional proficiency in English and Spanish

    Annual salary and benefits:  The anticipated part-time (20 hours per week) salary range for this position is $33,000 - $40,000 ($63,000 - $80,000 FTE equivalent). Compensation is commensurate with experience.
