    The Judicial Council of California is accepting applications for an Attorney I to work in the Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER) in the Judicial Education Programs unit. The attorney works closely with judicial officers to design, develop and deliver mandatory and recommended continuing education to judicial officers. The attorney regularly monitors and analyzes rules of court, statutes, and case law to maintain competency in the areas of law that are directly and indirectly critical and relevant to the assignment. In collaboration with judges, the attorney identifies content areas for judicial education programming, and describes the most effective delivery method for the content. As part of the development and delivery of the educational content, the attorney assists the judicial faculty in setting course learning objectives and creating lesson plans, course outlines, hypothetical case scenarios, PowerPoint presentations, and participant materials based on the most current law.

    The successful candidate will be expected to work in the San Francisco or Sacramento office.

    Responsibilities

    • Advise judicial curriculum committee, related judicial education workgroups and judicial faculty, and other advisory committees, management and colleagues as assigned
    • Serve generally as subject matter expert in designated legal topics and on adult education
    • Develop, review, and update courses and resources for judicial officers on an ongoing basis
    • Utilize knowledge of education principles to recommend active training tools and methods to improve courses for adult learners
    • Apply legal research principles to independently analyze and verify accuracy of course content
    • Review and update CJER publications and reference materials as assigned
    • Maintain professional competency and technical expertise as an attorney and adult education specialist, specializing in a particular area(s) of the law and procedure
    • On infrequent occasions, design and serve as faculty for select courses (e.g., Faculty Development)
    • Attend unit, supervisor, and quarterly/as-scheduled office-wide meetings
    • Review memoranda and other documents and provide general support to office management and colleagues as assigned

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    Juris doctor, and three (3) years of post-bar legal experience as a practicing attorney.

    After passing the state bar, work experience as a Law Clerk to a federal judge prior to formal state bar admission will be considered qualifying experience.

    Licensing and Certifications

    − Current active membership with the State Bar of California.

    Desirable Qualifications

    • Experience in criminal law and procedure strongly preferred.
